Lecture Title: An Overview of Helicopter Development in China and Some New Helicopter Technologies

Professor Xia received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and his PhD from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He is Professor of National Key Discipline of Aircraft Design, Director of National Key Laboratory of Rotorcraft Aeromechanics and President of Institute of Aerospace Engineering, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He was Dean of Graduate School and Dean of College of Aerospace Engineering, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is also President of China Chapter of Vertical Flight Society (formerly the American Helicopter Society), Committee Member of Asia/Australia Rotorcraft Forum, Committee Member of International Cooperation and Committee Member of Helicopter Chapter of Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Director of Editorial Board of “Aircraft Series” by Science Press, Associate Editor of “Aerospace Science and Technology”, Associate Editor of “Russian Aeronautics”. He was also Committee Member of Structural Dynamics and Committee Member of Education of the American Helicopter Society, Council Member of Chinese Society for Vibration Engineering, Editorial Member of Journal of Vibration Engineering and Editorial Member of “Aeronautical Science and Technology Series”. As Chairman of conferences, he held three International Basic Research Conferences on Rotorcraft Technology sponsored by American Helicopter Society, Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics and relevant universities and held the first China-Russia Forum on Helicopter Technology. He has published more than 20 high-level academic papers in the world’s leading journals in aerospace field. His academic researches were introduced in Vertiflite, the journal of the American Helicopter Society.

Lecture summary:
China's helicopter industry and education were founded in 1956 and 1957 respectively. After more than 60 years of development, China's helicopter has been grown from scratch and from small to large. The research and development system for light and medium helicopters and for military and civilian helicopters, as well as the education system for helicopter talents of bachelor, master and doctoral degrees have been established. The development overview of helicopter industry and education in China is introduced in this presentation. With the continuous development of nanomaterials and piezoelectric smart materials technology, the application of these new materials in helicopters has become possible, which provides the new technologies for the development of advanced helicopters with high performances. Combined with the researches by the author’s team, three new helicopter technologies including the design technology of carbon nanotubes/fiber reinforced composite rotor blade, helicopter vibration intelligent control technology, and the design technology of intelligent rotor are introduced in this presentation, providing the technical basis for the development of lightweight, high strength, low vibration, high maneuverability, intelligent helicopters.
