Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials (BIAM), one of the 156 key projects listed in China's First Five-year Plan, was established in 1956. It is the only comprehensive scientific research institute in China that is oriented to aviation and engaged in application fundamental research of advanced aeronautical materials, as well as development, applied research and engineering research of materials. It is a high level material research and development center serving national security industries and an important part of the national science and technology innovation system.
After over sixty years' development, BIAM has grown into a comprehensive scientific research institution involving over 60 research directions, which cover metallic materials, non- metallic materials, composites, material preparation and its processes, material property testing/characterization/evaluation; besides, BIAM provides industrial services, such as standardization, failure analysis and material database. BIAM owns 9 national and 14 provincial/ministerial key laboratories and centers, 4 national benchmark production lines and several subsidiaries. BIAM is authorized to confer Master’s and Doctor’s Degrees. Four of BIAM researchers have been selected as Academicians of Chinese Academy of Science or Engineering. Over 2000 research achievements have been obtained and more than 1000 patents have been granted since the establishment of BIAM. BIAM devotes to the R&D of advanced material technology and aims to provide customers with integrated material solutions combining materials design, selection, manufacturing, testing, repair and maintenance.
